How to Make a Stop-Motion Video for Your SaaS or Web App

Software is hard to film. There is no product to hold, no unboxing, no texture — just a rectangle of interface. Which is why most SaaS ads end up as a screen recording with a caption, and why most of them get scrolled past.

Stop-motion solves a specific problem here: it makes a flat interface behave like a physical object. Cards land on a surface. A cursor knocks something over. A dashboard assembles itself one panel at a time. The motion is deliberate and slightly imperfect, and that imperfection is what stops the thumb.

This guide walks through making one from a single screenshot. About ten minutes, and no video editor.

What stop-motion actually is here

Real stop-motion photographs a physical object, moves it a few millimetres, photographs it again. Twelve to twenty-four of those per second of footage.

You are not doing that. You are producing one strong frame and letting an image-to-video model infer the movement between it and where it should end up. What you control is the starting frame and the description of the motion — and that is where the whole result is decided.

The trap is thinking the prompt does the work. It does not. A vague frame with a brilliant prompt gives you mush. A precise frame with a plain prompt gives you something usable.

Step 1 — Prepare the frame, not the video

Open your app and take one screenshot of the moment that matters. Not the login page, not the empty state: the screen where your product is visibly doing its job.

Three things make a frame animate well:

  • Room around the subject. A screenshot cropped to the edges has nowhere to move. Leave margin — you can always crop later, you cannot invent space.
  • One focal point. If three things are competing for attention, the model will move all three and none of them will read.
  • Real data. Lorem ipsum and user@example.com survive the whole pipeline and land in the finished ad.

Step 2 — Turn the screenshot into a scene

A screenshot is a rectangle. Stop-motion needs an object. This step gives the interface a place to exist: a desk, a hand, a paper surface, a phone held at an angle.

In AdFrame, upload the screenshot as a product reference — that tells the engine the interface must be reproduced exactly rather than reinterpreted. Then describe the set:

Two rules save most attempts:

Never let the model redraw your UI. A reference marked as a screenshot is reproduced pixel-faithfully — labels, spacing, icons intact. Attach it as a loose style reference instead and it will invent plausible buttons and translate your menus.

Choose the surface before the motion. Stop-motion reads as physical because objects sit on something. Decide what that something is now; adding it later never looks right.

Step 3 — Write the movement

Now the video prompt. The mistake here is describing a feeling instead of a motion. "Dynamic, engaging, modern" produces drift. Describe what physically moves, from where, to where.

What works:

The cards slide in one by one from the bottom edge and settle into a grid, each landing with a small bounce. The phone stays perfectly still. The light does not change.

What does not:

Modern animated dashboard with smooth transitions and a professional feel.

Three specifics that carry most of the quality:

  • Name what stays still. Models love to drift the camera. Saying "the phone stays perfectly still" is often the single highest-impact sentence in the prompt.
  • Give the motion an order. "One by one", "left to right", "the last one arrives late" — sequence is what reads as intentional rather than random.
  • Keep it to one idea. Ten seconds holds one movement. Two movements in ten seconds reads as a glitch.

Step 4 — Pick a length and a model

Short wins. A five-second clip that loops cleanly outperforms a fifteen-second one that wanders, and it costs a third as much to iterate on.

Start at five seconds. Get the motion right there, then extend if the idea genuinely needs more time. Most do not.

On model choice: the standard engine is enough for a single deliberate movement, which is exactly what stop-motion is. Save the premium engine for clips with several subjects, camera movement, or synchronised audio.

Step 5 — Generate, judge, and re-roll deliberately

The first result is a draft. Judge it on three questions, in this order:

  1. Did the interface survive? Zoom in on the text. If labels drifted or a button appeared that does not exist in your product, the screenshot was not attached as a product reference. Fix that before touching the prompt.
  2. Is the motion legible in silence, at thumbnail size? Shrink the preview to the size of a feed post. If you cannot tell what moved, the motion is too subtle or there is too much of it.
  3. Does it loop? If the last frame is far from the first, it will stutter on repeat. Ask for the movement to settle back near its starting position.

Re-roll on one variable at a time. Changing the set, the motion and the length at once tells you nothing about which one was wrong.

The mistakes that make it look cheap

Too much motion. The instinct is to animate everything. Stop-motion is convincing because most of the frame is still — the movement is the exception, which is why the eye goes to it.

A perfectly smooth result. If it looks like a polished CSS transition, you have lost the effect. Stop-motion sells because it is slightly stepped. Ask for it: "small deliberate steps rather than smooth interpolation."

Filming the whole product. One feature per clip. A video that tries to show the dashboard, the settings and the billing page shows nothing.

Text baked into the video. Add copy in the caption or over the clip afterwards. Text generated inside the frame drifts between frames and often comes out misspelled.

A realistic sequence

For a SaaS launch, three clips beat one:

  • The problem. Something cluttered and manual — paper, tabs, a mess on a desk.
  • The moment. Your interface assembling itself out of that mess.
  • The result. One clean screen, still, holding for a beat.

Each is five seconds. Together they are a fifteen-second ad with a beginning, a middle and an end — and each one can be tested separately to find out which hook actually works.

What this costs

A five-second clip on the standard engine runs about 35 credits. Which means iterating — the part that actually determines quality — costs a few dollars, not a shoot day. Budget for six attempts rather than one: the difference between a first draft and a good clip is almost always four re-rolls, not a better prompt on the first try.

Stop-motion works for software because it borrows what software lacks: weight, surface, the sense that something was physically arranged. You do not need a camera or a studio to get it. You need one honest screenshot, a surface to put it on, and one movement described precisely enough to be reproduced.
